Parkroll
Etiquette

Open mats only work when everyone looks after everyone. These guidelines keep PARKROLL safe, clean and welcoming for all.

01

Environment

A friendly and welcoming atmosphere

  • This is not a competition, so relax.
  • Everyone is welcome — discrimination will not be tolerated.
  • Don't be afraid to tap. Tap early and tap often.
  • If you submit someone, remain respectful.
  • Be humble.
02

Respect

Respect the art. Respect each other.

  • Use respectful language and behaviour, especially around minors.
  • Do not behave aggressively or angrily. Anyone creating an unsafe or hostile environment will be asked to leave.
03

Hygiene

Be clean and keep everyone safe

  • Keep your fingernails and toenails short and clean.
  • Ensure your gi and training kit are clean, washed and completely dry.
  • Rashguards and spats are advised for no-gi training.
  • No shoes or sandals are permitted on the mats.
  • This is a public park. Please take all rubbish and personal belongings with you.
04

  • Tap early and tap often. Do not risk an injury through pride.
  • Tell your partner about any injuries or physical limitations before sparring.
  • When someone asks to "go light," this means approximately 25–30% intensity with no submissions.
  • Always protect yourself and remain focused while sparring.
  • Follow the instructions of PARKROLL staff and mat marshals at all times.

Good etiquette is the whole movement. Read it, live it, pass it on.
